Jisayah McGrew
Doula. Birthkeeper.
Herbalist.
My journey into birthwork started long before I ever called myself a doula.
Back in 2016, I shifted into a vegetarian lifestyle, and by 2017, I was deep into holistic healing while battling severe eczema and going through topical steroid withdrawal. That chapter is what first led me to really listen to my body. In 2018, I became a mother for the first time. By 2019, herbs had become a significant part of my life and healing.
Between 2019 and 2020, I experienced two miscarriages. Those losses pulled me deeper into womb work and reminded me of how powerful—and fragile—the body and spirit can be. I turned fully toward Traditional Chinese Medicine, committed to herbal healing, and moved into a vegan lifestyle. That season taught me how sacred the womb truly is, and how much it needs to be nourished, protected, and cared for with intention.
In 2021, I trained under a veteran doula from New Orleans who had supported over 2,000 births. I got certified in October of that year, and not long after, I conceived my second son. His pregnancy became my own initiation. I chose a completely wild pregnancy—no doctors, no medical monitoring—just herbs, intuition, education, and ancestral guidance. I freebirthed him at home, surrounded by my husband, sister, and children. He came into the world healthy and alert, and that birth awakened something in me, making it undeniable that this is the work I’m meant to do.
One of the biggest confirmations came when I supported another mother through her pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. I prepared her body with herbs before labor began, and even when her journey shifted into a cesarean, I stayed with her. She spent a week in the hospital, and I came almost every day—making sure she ate, helping her heal, holding space for her emotions, and reminding her that she was not alone. Supporting her through that raw, sacred, and difficult time became one of the most fulfilling experiences of my life, reminding me that this work is not just something I do—it’s who I am.
Today, my work as a doula is rooted in everything I’ve lived: personal experience, ancestral wisdom, womb healing, and body trust. I believe birth is a powerful journey of the body and spirit—not something that always needs medical intervention. I also believe there’s a time and place for medical support when truly needed. My role isn’t to control a woman’s choices, but to support her in making informed decisions and trusting what her body is telling her. I walk beside women through pregnancy, birth, and postpartum—reminding them they are capable, helping them stay connected to their bodies, and supporting them in whatever path they choose.
